Automatic Viscosity Control System
Benefits
- Real-time monitoring of process parameters:
- Flow rate
- Pressure
- Temperature
- Viscosity
- pH
- Feedback-controlled dilution based on viscosity
- Day tank for large storage capacity
- Multi-unit monitoring and control through LAN
- Real-time data acquisition
- PFA Teflon tubing and PTFE wetted surfaces
The Automatic Viscosity Control System blends/dilutes chemicals that are carried onboard in Teflon tanks or are supplied by a remote bulk chemical distribution system. Precisely-controlled solenoid valves blend up to three chemicals.
The Automatic Viscosity Control System incorporates a viscometer, a flowmeter, a temperature sensor, and other auxiliary sensors such as pressure and pH, for comprehensive in-process analytics. The inline viscometer automates the dilution process with no “undershoots”. Easy-to-use software can monitor and control multiple systems locally or over a LAN. The “functional panel” of the Automatic Viscosity Control System can be customized to incorporate filters, pressure gauges and other “passive” components. Fluid temperature and flow rate can be feedback controlled for consistent and repeatable measurements.

How It Works
![]() |
The Automatic Viscosity Control System is a single-stop fluid chemical manufacturing solution. The cart includes fluid temperature control, mixing, solvent dispensing and filtering capability. To maintain constant temperature for precise viscosity measurement, the fluid passes through a heat exchanger in a temperature controlled bath. The heat exchanger is a Teflon-based, flouro-polymer with higher heat conductivity than most other flouro-polymers. For fast dilution performance the cart bypasses all filters to maintain higher flow rates. The flow is controlled by a feedback loop of an ultrasonic flowmeter and a Levitronix® BPS-4 pump. Once the dilutions are complete, turning a few valves allows flow through the filters as a final quality protocol. |

FAQ
-
Do I really need a temperature bath to control fluid temperature? If the room temperature is well-controlled (within 1°C), then you may not need a temperature bath. You may also employ the VRT (Viscosity at a Reference Temperature) function to auto-compensate for any fluid temperature variation.
-
For viscosity control, my error bound seems too tight. What do you recommend? We recommend 1% of reading for your target viscosity error bound. For advanced users, they may increase this percentage given they have successfully tuned the system for optimal viscosity dilution response.
-
Why might the flow rate signal be unstable or noisy? There are generally two causes. One, micro bubbles. The air causes density changes which affect ultrasonic transmission through the fluid. Two, it represents actual flow (i.e. diaphragm pump) and can be filtered through the system software.

Benefits
- Complete sensor and/or system control
- Export a Microsoft® Excel compatible file
- Predicts viscosity for different fluid temperatures
Viscometer System Software (VSS) is a complete control and data acquisition application for use with our products.
Our controllers make it simple to add additional sensor signals and analyze data by exporting a Microsoft® Excel compatible file. VSS is capable of controlling viscosity by targeting and monitoring viscosity changes. VSS also predicts viscosity for different fluid temperatures. VSS can also control Levitronix® BPS series pumps.
